Roulette Rules
The Roulette wheel is perhaps the most recognised icon of the excitement and glamour of casino gaming.
In the American version of Roulette the wheel is divided into 38 evenly spaced slots numbered 0, 00 and 1 through 36. The zero slots are green and the other numbers are either red or black. The European version of Roulette the wheel is divided into 37 evenly spaced slots numbered 0, and 1 through 36. The House has an advantage of about 5.25% over the American player while for the European player the House has a 2.7% advantage. So it is maybe worth the while trying to find a casino which plays with a European wheel ("Monte Carlo").
The croupier (dealer) will spin the wheel and release an ivory ball in the opposite direction into the outer edge of the wheel, where it circles many times before slowing down. Gravity eventually causes the ball to fall into the one of the numbered slots on the wheel. Winning, and losing, depends on where the ball lands and which bets players had laid prior to the spin. The excitement of Roulette comes from the number of differing ways in which to place a bet and anticipation of watching the ball fall into a slot to end the game. Roulette is also the only casino game, apart from slots, where players are mere spectators and can make no decisions to affect the outcome of the game.
Players make a bet against the House by placing their chips in various boxes or on the lines between the boxes on the layout table.
In a real life casino players can often continue to make bets right up to just before the white ball drops down and starts bouncing around the spinning wheel, which the croupier will indicate by calling out "no more bets". However in an online experience the "Spin" option will not be available until at least one bet is placed on the layout. Once your bet is placed, the player should select the "Spin" option to spin up the wheel and release the ball. After the ball has settled in a slot on the wheel all bets are settled.
Bets in Roulette can be made in a variety of ways but are generally divided into two groups - "Inside" and "Outside". Inside bets are any bets made inside the numbered grid on the layout, and outside bets are those made outside this grid. For example, a bet on the number 20 will be an inside bet, while a bet on Red will be an outside bet. Inside Bets include -
A Single - placing a bet on any of the individual numbers. Single bets are paid at 35-to-1.
A Split - placing a bet on the line between two numbers. The player win if the the ball lands on either number. Split bets are paid at 17-to-1.
A Row - placing a bet on the first vertical line in a horizontal row of three numbers. The player wins if the ball lands in any one of the numbers on the chosen row. Row bets are paid 11-to-1.
A Triple - placing a bet the intersection of 0, 2, 00 or any three number intersection. The player wins if the ball lands in any one of the three numbers. Triple bets are paid 11-to-1.
A Corner - placing a bet on the corner of a group of four numbers. The player wins if the ball lands in any one of the four numbers. Corner bets are paid at 8-to-1.
A Top Line - the first 5 numbers at the top of the grid (0, 00, 1, 2, 3). If the ball lands in any one of these five numbers, odds are paid at 6-to-1. To make this bet, place your chips on the left-hand side of the grid at the horizontal line separating the 0, 00 row from the 1, 2, 3 row.
A Line - place your bet on a group of six numbers in two adjacent rows. All must be touching the same grid line. For example, 28, 29, 30 and 31, 32, 33 make up a Line. The player wins if the ball lands in any one of the six numbers in the Line. Line bets are paid at 5-to-1.
Outside Bets are bets placed on the layout table no the grid of numbers. These bets include -
A Column - place your bet on one of the vertical columns on the grid at the bottom of your chosen column, in the boxes marked with "2 to 1". The player wins if the ball lands in any number of the chosen column. Column bets are paid at 2-to-1. Columns do not include either 0 or 00.
A Dozen - place your bet on either the first, second or third dozen non-zero numbers. The player wins if the ball lands in any one of the twelve numbers in the dozen. Dozen bets are paid 2-to-1.
Red or Black - placing your bet on whether the winning number will be red or black. Winning bets are paid at 1-to-1.
Odd or Even - placing your bet on whether the winning number is odd or even (excludes 0 and 00). Winning bets are paid at 1-to-1.
High or Low - placing your bet on whether the winning number is between (1-18 known as "Low") or between (19-36 known as "High"). Winning bets are paid at 1-to-1.
Roulette has two sets of maximum limits: one for inside bets and one for outside bets. Check the table limits of your chosen casino before you play.
